Thailand Engages with China to Ease Durian Inspection Measures, Aims to Boost Smooth Exports During Fruit Season
April, 14 2025

Thailand is actively working to enhance durian exports to China by negotiating with Chinese representatives to ease strict inspection measures, especially regarding the BY2 residue checks, which currently require 100% sampling.
Thailand has also requested the deployment of more inspection equipment and officers at border checkpoints to facilitate the growing export volume during the fruit harvest season.
In addition, Thailand has proposed real-time data sharing on inspection conditions at border crossings to improve logistics efficiency and minimize shipping delays.
In 2024, Thailand exported durians to China with a total value of approximately USD 3.7 billion, equivalent to 833,000 tons, accounting for 97.4% of Thailand’s total durian exports.
Border Inspection Enhancements in China
According to the Thai Trade Offices in China, Nanning Customs has opened a “special lane” for importing agricultural products from ASEAN, prioritizing fruits. Measures include extended working hours, increased personnel, an advance appointment system, and construction of a BY2 testing lab, expected to be completed by May 2025. There are also plans to expand the traffic lanes at the checkpoint from 2 to 3 lanes in each direction.
Kunming Customs has already increased BY2 testing labs from 3 to 5 (4 currently operational), enabling up to 400 samples per day. Plans are also in place to expand traffic lanes from 2 to 12 lanes by early 2026, significantly easing congestion and expediting customs procedures.
Strengthening Durian’s Image in the Chinese Market
To reinforce Thai durian’s presence in China, strategies focus on highlighting its unique flavor and positioning it as superior to competitors. Marketing efforts are aimed at younger consumers via online platforms, along with promotional events through international trade fairs in major Chinese cities.
Additionally, consumer engagement will be enhanced through activities such as durian-themed buffet events, special dishes in Thai SELECT restaurants, and “Durian Tours” to boost consumption and create memorable experiences for Chinese consumers.
