China: The World's Largest Durian Importer in the First 9 Months of 2024
November, 27 2024

China remains the world’s top durian importer, with 1.38 million tons imported in the first nine months of 2024, worth $6.2 billion USD. Thai exporters must focus on quality control to maintain their market position.
Durian: A Highly Popular Fruit in China
In 2023, China consumed 91% of the world's durian supply. According to China Customs, durian imports reached 1.42 million tons, worth $6.7 billion USD. From January to September 2024, imports were already 1.38 million tons, showing continued strong demand.
Intense ASEAN Competition
In September 2024, China imported 167,000 tons of durians from Vietnam, worth $640.7 million USD, marking a 90% increase in volume and 71.5% in value from the previous year.
Meanwhile, Thai durian imports for the same month totaled 58,000 tons, worth $243.2 million USD. While volume rose 5.3%, value dropped 8.2%, reflecting intensified market competition.
Logistics: A Key Factor in Market Success
Fast delivery is crucial for Thai durian exporters. The China-Laos Railway now allows shipment from Thailand to Kunming in just two days, compared to seven days by sea or five days by road.
This reduces transportation costs per container from ¥70,000 to ¥20,000—a 70% decrease—leading to a 20-50% price drop in the Chinese market, enhancing Thailand’s competitiveness.
Key Strategies for Thai Exporters
Despite rising competition, Thailand remains the largest durian exporter, with 755,000 tons shipped in the first nine months of 2024, valued at $3.73 billion USD. To maintain market leadership, exporters should:
- Ensure quality control: Prevent underripe durians and pest issues to build consumer trust.
- Develop new varieties: Align with modern consumer preferences.
- Optimize logistics: Maximize the China-Laos Railway for faster delivery.
The Future of Thai Durian in China
With Vietnam, Malaysia, and the Philippines aggressively expanding in the market, Thailand's advantage remains its superior quality. Maintaining high standards and adapting to consumer needs will help Thai durians sustain their market dominance in China.
