What is a Geographical Indication (GI)?
A Geographical Indication (GI) is a type of intellectual property that certifies the origin and quality of a product unique to a specific location. It guarantees that similar products from other regions cannot replicate the same characteristics, thus enhancing consumer trust and market value. The DIP continues to register and promote Thai local products under the GI system to increase export opportunities and domestic sales.

GI Certification Boosts Export Value
All top-earning GI products are agricultural-based, particularly fruits that are already well-known internationally. GI certification enhances their market value by providing quality assurance and traceability.
For lower-exported GI products, the Ministry of Commerce is working with Thai trade representatives abroad and provincial trade offices to expand into new markets. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Commerce Phumtham Wechayachai believes this will increase Thailand’s export revenue significantly.
