Bueng Thatluang Specific Economic Zone (SEZ)

The Bueng Thatluang SEZ, often referred to as the “Dubai of ASEAN”, is a major economic project located in the heart of Vientiane, Laos.

  • Total investment: $1.6 billion (approx. 54 billion THB)
  • Concession area: 365 hectares
  • Concession period: 99 years
  • Construction began: 2011
  • Expected completion: 2030
  • Developer: Shanghai Wanfeng (China), in collaboration with the Lao government

Project Objectives

The Bueng Thatluang SEZ is designed to be a fully integrated economic zone, featuring:

  • Tourism
  • Financial services
  • Trade and logistics
  • Manufacturing & industry
  • Cultural and social development

The Lao government aims to transform Laos into a “Land-Link Nation”, serving as a regional trade and transportation hub. Despite being a landlocked country, Laos is strategically located between Thailand, Myanmar, Vietnam, Cambodia, and China, making it a key logistics center for ASEAN.

BTL's Role in Cross-Border Logistics

In support of the Bueng Thatluang SEZ development, Bangkok Terminal Logistics (BTL) has been entrusted by Chinese logistics partners to manage cross-border transportation for goods originating from China.

  • BTL’s responsibility: Transporting construction materials and furniture from Laem Chabang Port (Thailand) to Laos.
  • Ongoing shipments indicate continued project development, despite limited public updates.

Future Outlook

While the Bueng Thatluang SEZ project has faced delays, development remains active, supported by Chinese investors and the Lao government.

Will this ASEAN version of Dubai become a reality soon? Stay tuned for further updates.
